The Watermelon That Followed Me

A true story about synchronicity, symbols, and the unseen

Yesterday a dear friend came to visit. I dropped him at Superstore while I went to pray at the Jamat Khana, the Ismaili Muslim place of worship.

When I picked him up, he was holding a large watermelon. We went home and left it in the car overnight.

The Bag That Appeared

The next morning I drove him to the SkyTrain station. As he looked through the passenger-side window, he saw the watermelon still there. Realizing he would need to carry it, he turned to me and asked, “Do you have a bag for my watermelon?”

I told him to wait and walked toward the house. Silently, I wondered, “Oh Lord, where am I going to find a bag for a watermelon?”

Just then, my attention was drawn to a stack of papers. A flash of fluorescent green peeked out. I pulled it free and discovered a neatly folded bag. When I opened it, I couldn’t believe my eyes—printed right on the bag was a picture of a watermelon.

I laughed and brought it back to my friend, explaining the moment of inner asking and outer discovery. He too was astonished. We both felt that unmistakable lift—what I call the higher vibration feeling.

The Truck That Passed By

Later, we drove along the highway for nearly 40 minutes. The watermelon sat on the back seat. At a red light, we stopped abruptly and it rolled to the floor with a heavy thump.

At that exact instant, the traffic beside us began to move. A black truck turned in front of us. In the open bed was a mound of watermelons.

• Or was it a metaphor—life reminding me to pay attention to signs of abundance?
